DIY Superhero Shield to Improve Fine Motor Skills

Our summer camp activities for kids start with a craft session. During this session, they will be creating superhero shields - allowing them to become the heroes of their own stories.

Our autism center in Detroit encourages DIY kids’ crafts like this one as it provides a multisensory approach to learning and development.

“Using colorful objects can capture the attention of children with autism”, Clinical Director Ian McGarvey explains.

“Bright, distinct colors can make tasks more visually appealing and interesting, making them more engaged in activities designed to improve fine motor skills”.

Step 1Collect all materials: print out of shield(s), scissors, glue, paper plates.
Step 2Cut out the shield(s)
Step 3Glue paper shield on back of paper plate
Step 4Let it dry

While the shield dries, the kids can continue with summer camp activities. They can color in a coloring book and listen to superhero tunes. Our Detroit Autism Center curated a special musical playlist full of fun and empowering songs you and your child with autism can enjoy!

Superhero Bedtime Stories for Children with Autism

For quiet moments before bedtime, our autism center in Detroit selected a few inspiring books featuring diverse and relatable characters. Your child will be encouraged to greet each day with a sense of empathy, resilience, and self-confidence.

Saving the universe requires a good night of rest! Remind them that this is their final task before they earn their superhero certification. Print out their Superhero Certificate and leave it for them to find in the morning!
